AUGUSTA, Ga. (October 29, 2026) — Best Lawyers® today announced the release of the 2027 Best Law Firms™ – Canada rankings, recognizing 1,325 law firms across 68 regional practice areas, representing the top 2.5% of the Canadian legal market.

Now in its third edition, Best Law Firms™ – Canada recognizes firms demonstrating professional excellence through a comprehensive research process incorporating feedback from the legal community, client references and practice group evaluations.

The 2027 research process included surveys of 8,274 lawyers and 1,360 law firms, 4,631 client references and 354 practice group interviews.

"The depth of this research gives us a valuable view into the Canadian legal market, from the focused expertise of specialized boutiques to the broad reach of regional and national firms," said Valerie Smith, senior research manager at Best Law Firms.

Canada's Top Law Firms Recognized Nationally and Regionally

The rankings recognize firms across three levels of distinction:

  • Regional Recognition: 1,325 firms recognized across 68 practice areas, representing the top 2.5% of the Canadian legal market.

  • National Recognition: 502 firms recognized across 34 practice areas, representing the top 0.96% of the market.

  • "Law Firm of the Year": 27 firms honored across 34 practice areas, representing the top 0.052% of the market.

Among firms earning the highest number of National Tier 1 rankings, Fasken and Borden Ladner Gervais LLP lead with 30 rankings each, followed by Gowling WLG with 29. Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP, McCarthy Tétrault LLP and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP each earned 28.

Corporate and Commercial Litigation, Personal Injury Litigation and Labour and Employment Law remain among the most widely represented practice areas at the national level.

Research Reveals Rapid Growth in AI Adoption Across Canadian Firms

Accompanying the rankings, Best Law Firms released its third annual Canada Legal Market Report, examining financial performance, billing practices, client relationships, artificial intelligence adoption and other trends shaping the Canadian legal industry.

Based on survey responses from 357 Canadian law firms, the report reveals a significant acceleration in generative AI adoption, particularly among large and midsize firms.

Among firms with 100 or more lawyers, 80% are now piloting generative AI tools in select practice areas, up from 57% in 2025. An additional 15% have fully implemented AI across multiple practice areas, more than doubling from 7% the previous year.

At midsize firms with 20 to 99 lawyers, full implementation increased from 7% to 26%, while the share of firms piloting AI tools rose from 33% to 42%.

As adoption accelerates, firms are strengthening their approaches to responsible AI use. The share of firms with established policies governing generative AI use in client matters increased from 23% to 73%, while 84% now train lawyers on the technology's limitations and risks, up from 24% last year.

"The Canadian market is still largely in the testing phase, but the billing data shows that GenAI is already affecting how some legal work is delivered. The next challenge will be turning experimentation into consistent practices around quality, pricing and client expectations," said Elizabeth Petit, senior vice president of research & product strategy at Best Lawyers.

AI Efficiency Gains Have Yet to Transform Traditional Billing Models

While artificial intelligence is changing how Canadian law firms operate, the report finds that traditional billing practices remain largely unchanged.

Among firms using generative AI that responded to the billing question, 34% reported reduced billable hours for certain tasks, while 31% experienced increased efficiency without changes to billable hours.

As clients increasingly push for alternatives to traditional hourly billing, 74% of surveyed firms offer alternative fee arrangements, down one percentage point from the previous year. However, eight of the nine most commonly used arrangements remain tied to the billable-hour model, highlighting the industry's continued reliance on traditional pricing structures.

Meanwhile, Canadian law firms reported stronger financial performance, with average revenue per lawyer increasing 12% year over year to CAD $535,000. Median revenue per lawyer also rose 11%, reaching CAD $500,000.

Client Relationships and Specialization Remain Central to Growth

Beyond technology, the report highlights the continued importance of reputation, specialization and client relationships in the Canadian legal market.

Among surveyed firms, 92% identified deep specialization in particular industries or practice areas as a key strategy for differentiation, while 82% emphasized client feedback and service improvement.

Additionally, 57% of responding firms reported that at least half of their new work came from returning clients or referrals, demonstrating the continued importance of established client relationships.

"When more than half of responding firms receive at least half of their new work from returning clients or referrals, client experience is not separate from business development," Petit said. "It is one of its strongest foundations."

However, only 17% of firms regularly conduct formal client feedback surveys, highlighting an opportunity for firms to strengthen how they measure and respond to client satisfaction.

Together, these findings illustrate how Canadian firms are balancing traditional drivers of business growth with new investments in technology and operational efficiency.
