France’s Leading Law Firms Recognized in 2027 Best Law Firms™ Rankings
AUGUSTA, Ga. (October 15, 2026) — Best Lawyers® today announces the 2027 Best Law FirmsTM – France rankings, marking the second edition of firm awards for professional excellence across the French legal market.
The rankings provide clients and legal professionals with an independent resource for identifying leading law firms across the country. This year’s research also offers insight into a legal market navigating shifts in artificial intelligence, pricing and client relationships.
The research process included surveys of 3,687 lawyers and 837 firms, 8,500 client references, and more than 100 practice group interviews, to evaluate firm performance and standing.
“By combining feedback from lawyers, clients and firm leaders with firm-level data, we can see how the market is evolving," said Valerie Smith, senior research manager at Best Law Firms. "The results highlight the importance of specialized expertise, strong client relationships and firms’ ability to adapt to changing expectations.”
Leading French Firms Identified
Recognitions span regional and national rankings, as well as the highly selective “Law Firm of the Year” awards.
812 firms earned regional rankings across 49 practice areas, representing the top 2% of the French legal market.
331 firms earned national rankings across 30 practice areas, placing them among the top 0.81%.
24 firms received “Law Firm of the Year” recognition across 26 practice areas, a distinction limited to the top 0.059% of the market.
De Gaulle Fleurance leads this year’s results with 19 National Tier 1 rankings, followed by CMS Francis Lefebvre with 14. Gide Loyrette Nouel AARPI and De Pardieu Brocas Maffei each earned 13 National Tier 1 rankings.
At the highest level of recognition, “Law Firm of the Year” honors were awarded to the top-performing firm in each eligible national practice area. Recipients include Latham & Watkins LLP for Banking and Finance Law, White & Case LLP for Capital Markets Law, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan for International Arbitration, Gide Loyrette Nouel AARPI for Real Estate Law, Bredin Prat for Corporate Law, and CMS Francis Lefebvre for Tax Law, among others.
Banking and Finance is France's Top Recognized Practice Areas
Banking and Finance Law is the most widely represented national practice area in the 2027 rankings, followed by Corporate Law and Litigation. Labor and Employment Law and Mergers and Acquisitions Law are tied for fourth, with Privacy and Data Security Law completing the five most represented areas.
The results reflect several developments affecting the French legal market. Corporate and M&A practices remain prominent amid continued transaction activity, with 4,435 M&A transactions recorded in France in 2025, a 16% year-over-year increase. French startups also raised €4.6 billion during the first half of 2026, up 65% in value from the same period in 2025.
Privacy and Data Security Law is also among the most represented areas as organizations face increased scrutiny around personal information. In 2026, France’s CNIL is dedicating half of its inspections and enforcement activity to data security following a series of large-scale breaches.
AI, Pricing and Client Relationships Reshape Legal Practice
Beyond the rankings, survey responses from 166 firms provide insight into how French law firms are adapting their operations and client strategies.
Generative AI adoption is advancing rapidly. Among firms answering the adoption question, 46% said they had fully implemented GenAI tools, while another 31% were piloting them. Client communication has moved more slowly: among AI-using firms that addressed disclosure, 51% said they discuss their use of GenAI only when clients ask.
“The contrast between internal governance and external communication is especially interesting. Firms are investing in training and policies, yet most still wait for clients to raise the subject," Smith said. "As client expectations become more defined, proactive and plain-language disclosure could become an important trust signal.”
Pricing practices are also evolving. Among respondents to the alternative billing question, 82% offer at least one alternative fee arrangement, while 94% of those addressing billing practices provide detailed invoices, pointing to greater flexibility and transparency around legal spend.
“The transparency data matters just as much as the fee structures themselves. Detailed invoices, upfront estimates and regular budget updates are now common practices among respondents. The low incidence of billing disputes suggests that predictability and communication are doing meaningful work in the client relationship," Smith added.
Client relationships remain central to firm growth. Sixty-six percent of responding firms said returning clients or referrals account for at least half of their new work. Yet only 16% regularly conduct client surveys, suggesting an opportunity for firms to take a more structured approach to client feedback. Meanwhile, 93% cited deep specialization as a way they differentiate themselves in the market.
