Biography
Jeffrey H. Lipe is a founding partner of Lipe Lyons Murphy Nahrstadt & Pontikis LTD in Chicago, Illinois. He leads the firm’s general liability practice and is a member of the professional liability, commercial litigation, product liability, construction, transportation, and labor and employment practice groups. His practice includes product liability, construction litigation, commercial litigation, employment counseling and litigation, premises liability, transportation liability matters, and Personal Injury Litigation – Defendants. Mr. Lipe holds an AV Preeminent peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell, reflecting peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.
Mr. Lipe has been selected by his peers for inclusion in Illinois Leading Lawyers for commercial litigation, personal injury defense law – general, and personal injury defense law – products liability. He has also received peer recognition within the Chicago legal community for his work in commercial litigation, construction law, and insurance law.
Mr. Lipe is a trial attorney with more than 30 years of experience and has tried over 30 cases to jury verdict in state and federal courts. His litigation background includes the preparation and trial of catastrophic injury and wrongful death claims, with a focus on defending individuals and businesses in complex personal injury matters.
Mr. Lipe represented Metra and Chicago and North Western Railroad in a highly publicized trial involving noted violinist Rachel Barton, who was injured while disembarking from a commuter train. He also obtained a complete defense verdict for an international crane manufacturer in the retrial of a product liability lawsuit alleging defective design of an overhead crane, following a prior trial that resulted in a substantial verdict for the plaintiff.
In the employment law area, Mr. Lipe has defended employers in lawsuits alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII, the Equal Pay Act, the Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act, and ERISA. His experience includes obtaining summary judgment on behalf of a hotel owner and manager in a lawsuit brought by a former employee alleging failure to provide reasonable accommodations, wrongful termination, and denial of health insurance coverage based on the employee’s medical condition.
Mr. Lipe also has significant experience in construction litigation, including matters involving breach of contract, professional liability claims for delay damages and escalation costs, and general liability claims alleging unsafe work practices.
