At Carlsmith Ball, our history is driven by change. From the founding of our first office in Hilo in 1857, to welcoming the state’s first woman lawyer, to representing Hawaii’s earliest condominium projects, we’ve been a part of the evolving legal landscape over the past 165 years. And we haven’t stopped there. Today, Carlsmith Ball has offices in Honolulu, Hilo, Kona and Maui. We have attorneys with diverse backgrounds, extensive knowledge and a deep breadth of expertise in multiple practice areas. Our attorneys are known as Best Lawyers© and legal leaders with a strong reputation for excellence and commitment to our clients. We also possess a collaborative and innovative spirit that encourages our attorneys to work across practice groups. Together, they share knowledge and call on new approaches as well as refined tactics to deliver quality legal services. Drawing from a century and a half of history, we’ll continue to lead the way in Hawaii’s legal industry.

Carlsmith Ball serves as a one-stop source of legal services and strategic counsel for Fortune 500 companies; small and mid-size corporations; banks; institutions; state, local and federal governments; and individuals. We provide strategic, practical counsel and the knowledge that comes from deep experience in a wide range of areas, including:

Administrative: We represent US and foreign business clients in their dealings with government agencies and regulatory bodies, including in the areas of energy, public and governmental affairs, land use and entitlements, permitting, public utilities, environmental regulation and compliance, historic preservation and Native Hawaiian considerations, maritime, procurement, and water rights.

Admiralty & Maritime: The firm maintains a dominant admiralty and shipping practice throughout the Pacific, with an international client base spanning the shipping, maritime, transportation, and marine insurance industries.

Banking & Finance: We provide counsel to national, state-chartered, local, and foreign financial institutions in all types of business, regulatory, and litigation matters.

We actively promote clients' interests in such areas as commercial development, agriculture, tourism, land use, and renewable energy.
