José António Barreiros obtained a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.
His legal apprenticeship was carried out under the guidance of lawyers Francisco Salgado Zenha and Xencora Camotim. Lawyer since Fev 1974.
In 1972 received the Portuguese Bar Association’s Alves de Sá award, n 2018 the Medal of Honor of the Bar, in 2020 the Gold Medal of the Bar.
He taught Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law for seventeen years at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and also at Lusíada University and International University.
Former member of the executive General Council of the Portuguese Bar Association, as well as of its disciplinary High Council, to which he presided and President of the Legislative Policy Cabinet in the Bar.
Member of the Legislative Commission that drafted the Criminal Code of 1987.
Alongside his legal practice he has written historical essays and works of fiction, and published books in the field of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure
