Vanessa is a data governance lawyer with a specialty in data acquisition, data security and data management. She sits as part of Fasken's Information Security Governance Committee, and is co-leader of the Trade Secrets and Cybersecurity group. A Certified Data Protection Officer and a Senior Lead Implementor for ISO/IEC 27701:2019, Vanessa's practice is centered around data-driven emerging technologies and organizations, such AI development and cybersecurity. She also advises organizations on preparing for incident response and on forensic readiness. As more and more organizations' valuation depend on their ability to identify, protect and leverage data, Vanessa's work is often sought after in M&A and financing transactions.
Prior for joining Fasken, she was a General Counsel and a Data Protection Officer for a multinational in the cybersecurity industry, and she has extensive experience implementing governance, risk and compliance activities in relation to data assets.
Apart from her career at Fasken, Vanessa is also the Secretary of the Board of Directors of Cyberéco, a non-for-profit with corporate membership for improving cybersecurity, and OpenNorth, a non-for-profit involved in smart cities and data governance. She volunteers as a mentor for Next AI Canada, and is also part of the Board of Directors for Data Franca, a non-for-profit which supports the use of French in artificial intelligence and data science. Vanessa teaches incident response and crisis management at St-Thomas University, in Miami.
Vanessa has been named within Canada's Top 20 Women in Cybersecurity by ITWC in 2020, and has since then been involved in many activities in relation to the role of women in the cybersecurity industry.
