Biography

Tracy E. Phillips is a family lawattorney at Selzer Gurvitch in Bethesda, Maryland, representing clients throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C. She advises individuals and families through every stage of the legal process, from negotiated resolutions to litigation in court. Clients value her thoughtful approach, attention to detail, and commitment to keeping them informed throughout their cases.

Tracy works with clients on a broad range of family law matters, including divorce, child custody, parenting disputes, alimony, child support, relocation matters, LGBTQ family issues, protective orders, and marital agreements. She also handles cases involving international family law concerns and matters affecting military families. In addition, Tracy regularly prepares and advises clients on prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.

Understanding that family law matters can involve significant financial and personal concerns, Tracy helps clients evaluate both immediate and long-term considerations when making decisions about their future. She frequently works alongside accountants, financial professionals, appraisers, and business valuation consultants in cases involving complex assets and property division. At Selzer Gurvitch, she also collaborates with attorneys in the firm’s real estate, tax, and estates and trusts practices when those issues intersect with family law matters.

In custody and parenting disputes, Tracy works closely with clients to address the practical and emotional challenges that often arise during litigation. She has experience identifying when additional support from parenting coordinators, custody evaluators, or mental health professionals may help move a case forward and support the needs of the family.

Before joining Selzer Gurvitch, Tracy practiced family law for nearly seven years at a large Maryland law firm. Earlier in her career, she practiced commercial litigation at a regional litigation firm in Washington, D.C., where she handled jury and bench trials in both state and federal courts. She has also taken and defended hundreds of depositions.

Tracy is a trained mediator and has completed Maryland’s Best Interest Attorney training under the state’s Child Counsel and Custody Rules and Guidelines. She previously served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Nelson W. Rupp, Jr. of the Montgomery County Circuit Court. During law school, she worked with organizations focused on supporting victims of domestic violence and child abuse, including the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the National Center for Victims of Crime.

Active in the legal community, Tracy is involved with the Bar Association of Montgomery County and currently serves a two-year term on the association’s Executive Committee.
