Biography
Tom Wilmoth joined the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin in 2021 and works with the firm’s litigation team on mass torts, federal multidistrict litigation, consumer class actions, and Consumer Protection Law matters. Based in Durham, North Carolina, Tom represents individuals who have been harmed by unsafe products, unfair practices, and corporate misconduct.
Before joining the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, Tom spent more than a decade practicing corporate complex litigation on the defense side. His work included developing expert witness testimony in the medical field for product liability cases. This background gives him valuable insight into how large companies evaluate risk, litigation strategy, and case development, which informs his current work on behalf of consumers. At the firm, Tom especially values the opportunity to work with veterans and their families.
Tom’s work ethic was shaped early in life. While growing up, he held a variety of jobs, including working in tobacco fields at nearby farms, at a grocery store, and in a local diner. He paid his way through college at UNC Greensboro by combining scholarships, student loans, and steady employment, gaining a firsthand understanding of the challenges many working families face.
During his sophomore year of college, Tom’s father passed away, prompting him to reassess his goals and responsibilities. He changed his major from Music to Political Science and became the first person in his family to earn a college degree. After graduating from UNC Greensboro, Tom joined the Greensboro Police Department, where he served the community for eight and a half years. His time in law enforcement introduced him to the legal system from a practical perspective and sparked his interest in becoming an attorney.
Wanting to see cases through from start to finish, Tom enrolled at Elon University School of Law at age 28. Returning to school presented challenges, but he committed himself to the process and earned his Juris Doctor in 2010. Although he initially planned to pursue a career as a prosecutor, a government hiring freeze led him to begin practicing corporate law in complex civil litigation and class action matters.
In 2017, Tom was involved in a serious accident that resulted in the loss of vision in his left eye. Several years later, during the COVID pandemic, an unrelated medical emergency caused a retinal detachment in his right eye, leaving him completely blind for several weeks. These experiences reshaped his perspective and deepened his understanding of how sudden injuries can affect every aspect of a person’s life. He brings this empathy to his work with clients whose lives have been disrupted by injury or loss.
Today, Tom applies his legal background, attention to detail, and personal experience to his role at the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin. He approaches each case with preparation and persistence, carefully examining the facts and legal options available. A former Eagle Scout, Tom values readiness, accountability, and service. He is committed to treating every client with respect, dignity, and fairness while working toward meaningful resolutions under the law.
