A veteran intellectual property lawyer, Tom concentrates his practice on the strategic development and management of IP portfolios, with a particular emphasis on delivering business focused legal advice. He assists clients in evaluating IP coverage, protecting core IP assets, handling Hatch Waxman cases, managing domestic and international patent prosecution, and preparing infringement, noninfringement, freedom to operate, and validity opinions. Over the course of his career, he has also acquired extensive trademark experience while managing portfolios comprising thousands of marks worldwide.
His client base reflects the breadth and depth of his practice, spanning major pharmaceutical, health science, and medical device companies, educational institutions, retail businesses, and early stage ventures. Among the many organizations that have relied on his counsel are Biomet, Inc., IU Health, Eli Lilly and Company, Great Lakes Chemical Company, Indiana University, Purdue University, Resort Condominiums International, Inc., Roche Diagnostics, Inc., and Steak & Shake, Inc. This diversity of clientele has given Tom a broad perspective on the unique intellectual property challenges that organizations of every size and industry encounter.
Deeply committed to both the legal profession and the broader community, Tom has served as President of the Indianapolis Bar Association and on the boards of the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indiana State and Indianapolis Bar Foundations. He is a past President of the Board of Alumni of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and a recipient of its Distinguished Alumni Award. His civic engagement extends well beyond the legal profession, having chaired the boards of the Make A Wish Foundation of Indiana, Inc. and the American Pianists Association, in addition to serving on the boards of numerous other charitable and nonprofit organizations.
