Steven Liening is a skilled and tenacious litigator who represents businesses, property owners, and individuals in complex disputes. His practice concentrates on business litigation, real estate litigation, and fraud-related claims, where he helps clients resolve conflicts that threaten their financial interests and reputations. Whether advocating for a business embroiled in a contract dispute, litigating a commercial lease disagreement, or uncovering and pursuing claims of fraud, Steven brings focused, strategic advocacy to every matter. A stranger once approached one of Steven’s clients and said, “If there’s anything out there that can help you, Steve will find it.”
Steven understands that litigation is often a high-stakes and high-stress experience. His approach combines sharp legal analysis with a calm, confident courtroom presence, assuring clients that their case is in steady, capable hands.
Before joining Hellmuth & Johnson, Steven served as a public defender and later handled complex commercial litigation at a midsize firm. He also gained valuable insight into judicial decision-making as a law clerk for the Chancery Court in Memphis, Tennessee, and as a judicial extern for the Hon. Bernice Donald of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
In addition to his core focus on business and property disputes, Steven has litigated matters involving construction defects, personal injury, defamation, white collar defense, and trust and estate disputes.
Steven brings a global perspective to his practice, having lived overseas for several years, served as an Arabic linguist in the U.S. Army, and deployed to Afghanistan. His military service, which included dozens of combat missions and humanitarian efforts, reflects his deep commitment to service and integrity—values he brings to his legal work every day.
Steven earned his J.D. from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis, where he received a full academic scholarship, won the school’s mock trial competition, served as a graduate research assistant, and held a leadership role on the Moot Court Board. He also holds degrees in Arabic and music and is an accomplished performer, having played in venues across North America and Europe.
