Stephen's practice focuses on regulation, competition law/foreign investment and copyright law. Stephen has particular expertise in the media/telecom sector, having acted as regulatory/legal counsel in a number of major high profile transactions in this sector.
Stephen provides strategic advice and counsel to media and telecom companies, including broadcasters, online content providers, broadcasting distributors and mobile service providers. He also advises investors on media acquisitions and the application of the foreign investment rules in the communications sector and generally under Canada’s Investment Canada Act regime.
Stephen also advises clients on regulatory matters on marketing and advertising, including compliance with competition legislation, industry regulations, consumer protection, copyright and regulated product requirements.
Stephen has appeared before various administrative tribunals and agencies, including the CRTC, the Canadian Copyright Board, the Competition Bureau and Industry Canada.
Stephen has been consistently recognized as a leading practitioner of communications law by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory (Telecommunications) and The Best Lawyers in Canada (Communications Law).
Before studying for his law degree, Stephen worked as an economist and policy advisor for the Canadian government in the area of competition policy, regulatory reform and telecommunications.
