Stanley Levy is Of Counsel to Levy Konigsberg and one of the founders of the firm. Mr. Levy has been listed in Best Lawyers for every year since 1999. Mr. Levy is one of the pioneers of asbestos litigation. He was among the first lawyers on the East Coast to file cases on behalf of workers who developed asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma. In the early 1980s, Mr. Levy served as lead trial counsel in cases involving a major submarine yard on the East Coast.
In the mid-1980s, when Johns-Manville filed for bankruptcy due to its asbestos liabilities, it was Mr. Levy who was appointed to head the committee of asbestos victims. This appointment reflected the accomplishments and reputation of Mr. Levy as recognized by his fellow lawyers handling asbestos cases. In the 1990s, Mr. Levy was appointed to lead a federal committee to manage the growing asbestos litigation. He was appointed by a federal court to assist in establishing the rules by which asbestos cases were litigated in federal court.
Mr. Levy spear-headed the building of Levy Konigsberg’s powerful and dynamic asbestos department. He recruited and hired top trial lawyers committed to representing asbestos victims all the way through trial and, if needed, through appeals. Mr. Levy established the culture of excellence and professionalism that remains at Levy Konigsberg to this day.
Mr. Levy has been in charge of multiple committees representing asbestos victims in asbestos bankruptcy trusts. His expertise on asbestos bankruptcy trust issues is well-established and shared with other members of the firm.
Prior to Mr. Levy focusing on asbestos litigation, he regularly handled airplane crash cases for many years. Mr. Levy represented the victims of airline disasters, both nationally and internationally.
Mr. Levy is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School. He was formerly Assistant Attorney General for the State of New York. He has given frequent lectures over the years and has authored more than 20 articles relating to his areas of legal expertise.
