Sonya Shikhman is the Founder and Managing Partner of Shikhman Barristers, a Toronto criminal defence firm representing individuals facing serious criminal allegations, regulatory proceedings and related appeals.
Her practice is grounded in trial preparation, appellate advocacy and close attention to the legal principles that govern a fair process.
Sonya represents clients in matters involving homicide, sexual offences, drug allegations and other serious criminal charges. Her approach begins with the evidence: what the Crown alleges, what the record supports and whether the state has acted within the limits imposed by law.
Sonya serves as Duty Counsel at the Ontario Court of Appeal through the Pro Bono Inmate Appeals Program. She has taught trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School and contributes legal commentary on criminal procedure, evidence and the administration of justice.
Sonya was recognized in the 2025 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada.
