Sidney Troister is a Toronto real estate lawyer at Torkin Manes LLP whose practice focuses on commercial and residential real estate transactions, leasing, financing matters, and professional liability issues relating to real estate practice. His work also includes Legal Malpractice Law and Professional Malpractice Law matters involving the standard of practice of real estate lawyers in Ontario.
Sidney regularly advises industry participants, government bodies, title insurers, and lawyers on real estate transactions, risk management, and practice issues. He serves as counsel to Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company and title insurers, providing legal opinions, transaction strategy, and litigation support concerning real estate transactions, professional negligence claims, and the enforceability of agreements.
With more than 50 years of experience in Real Estate Law, Sidney also acts as an arbitrator and mediator in complex commercial real estate and leasing disputes. Sidney has held a number of leadership roles within Ontario’s legal profession. He is an elected bencher and has chaired significant committees for the Law Society of Ontario. He is also the author of “The Law of Subdivision Control in Ontario,” a frequently referenced text on the Planning Act. The fourth edition reflects legislative amendments developed after many years of involvement in planning law reform initiatives.
Throughout his career, Sidney has remained active in legal education and professional development. He has presented programs on real estate law, title insurance, planning law, mortgage fraud, leasing, and practice management for the Law Society of Ontario, the Ontario Bar Association, and local law associations across Ontario. From 1990 to 2000, he served as co-head of the Real Estate Law section of the Ontario Bar Admission Course. He also founded and chaired the Law Society of Ontario’s annual Real Estate Law Summit for two decades.
