Biography

Sergio R. Karas, B.A., J.D. is a Canadian lawyer (Barrister and Solicitor) and a Certified Specialist in Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Law, as designated by the Law Society of Ontario. He practises Immigration Law in Toronto, Ontario, and is the founder of Karas Immigration Law Professional Corporation.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mr. Karas has assisted hundreds of individuals and families in establishing themselves in Canada. His practice includes representing individuals, families, and multinational corporations in a wide range of Canadian immigration matters, including temporary residence, permanent residence, citizenship, and corporate immigration. He has also acted in matters that have received national and international media attention.

Mr. Karas earned an Honours degree in Political Science from York University and obtained his Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School. He speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish, and has a working knowledge of Italian, Portuguese, and German. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Canadian Bar Association. His professional involvement includes serving as Past Chair of the Citizenship and Immigration Section of the Ontario Bar Association, Past Chair of the Immigration and Nationality Committee of the International Bar Association, Past Chair of the Canada Committee and the International Ethics Committee, and current Co-Chair of the Immigration and Naturalization Committee of the American Bar Association Section of International Law. He is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Mr. Karas is frequently invited to speak to lawyers, business leaders, and human resources professionals at international conferences and professional programs. He has been listed in publications such as Who’s Who in Corporate Immigration Law, Thought Leaders, and Best Lawyers, and has received the “Platinum Client Champion” designation from Martindale-Hubbell.

He is regularly contacted by Canadian and international media to provide commentary on Immigration Law and public policy. His articles have been published in multiple languages in national and international journals. He is a regular guest on local, national, and international radio and television programs and contributes commentary on immigration-related issues to HR Reporter, Employment Law Today, and Law360 Canada.

Through his work on Canada–U.S. relations and border security matters, Mr. Karas has participated in discussions that have informed Canadian immigration visa policies. He also served for ten years on the Board of Directors of Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS) in Toronto.

In addition to his Immigration Law practice, Mr. Karas has been involved in significant international legal matters, including representation of Holocaust survivors and their heirs in claims involving dormant Swiss bank accounts and assets taken during the Second World War. His work in this area has been documented in books such as “Hitler’s Silent Partners: Swiss Banks, Nazi Gold and the Pursuit of Justice” by Isabel Vincent and “Hitler’s Secret Bankers” by Adam LeBor, and has been featured in several television documentaries.
