Biography

Scott Glovsky is one of the most experienced, respected, and trusted insurance lawyers in the nation. With offices in Pasadena and Claremont, California, the Law Offices of Scott Glovsky was founded in 1999 and specializes in insurance bad faith, catastrophic personal injury, health-related litigation, sexual abuse, and trial work. Our firm helps ordinary people suffering because of the negligent and bad acts of organizations and corporations. Our clients have included health insurance policyholders denied needed care for brain injuries and organ transplants; seniors who have been physically and financially abused: and numerous accident victims harmed by faulty products and negligent individuals and companies. Scott received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his J.D. from Cornell Law School.

Scott Glovsky is nationally recognized as an advocate for the rights of the injured and for insurance policyholders. Scott appeared in the film SiCKO and has provided advice relating to health insurance in People Magazine. His cases have been profiled on CNN and other major networks. He is a repeat guest on AirTalk with Larry Mantle. Scott's cases have been profiled on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 and Paula Zahn Now, NBC News, CBS Evening News, ABC News, Good Morning America, Univision and various other television and radio programs.

Scott has received honors and awards for his work on health insurance bad faith cases. He was named California Lawyer Magazine’s 2015 California Attorney of the Year Award for his work on behalf of thousands of children living with autism who were wrongfully denied coverage for essential therapies by their insurance companies. In 2010, The Consumer Attorneys’ Association of Los Angeles nominated Scott for its Trial Lawyer of the Year award. The Consumer Attorneys’ Association of California awarded Scott its Street Fighter of the Year Award in 2008. In 2007, The Consumer Attorneys’ Association of Los Angeles awarded Scott its President’s Award of Merit. And Scott has been a Super Lawyer every year since 2006.

Scott has been a faculty member of the Trial Lawyers College since 2015 where he teaches lawyers from around the country how to successfully try cases. He is the author of the book Fighting Health Insurance Denials: A Primer for Lawyers, the training manual and reference book for lawyers fighting health insurance denials. Scott is the host of Trial Lawyer Talk, a long-running, educational podcast featuring in-depth personal interviews and sound advice from some of the country's best trial lawyers.

Scott frequently lectures and writes in the area of insurance law, primarily on the topic of health insurance liability. He has lectured on health insurance issues for organizations including Mealeys, the Consumer Attorneys of California, the Consumer Attorneys' Association of Los Angeles ("CAALA"), and numerous physician and consumer organizations. He has published several articles, primarily in the area of insurance law, in publications including California Litigation, The Advocate, Mealey's Litigation Report: Insurance, Forum, and Mealey's Managed Care Liability Report.

Our firm's cases have affected millions of insurance policyholders through forcing insurance companies to change their behavior. Some notable achievements include:

  • Exposing Aetna’s review practices of medical directors not reviewing medical records before denying treatment through litigation that led to national news and investigations into Aetna by the United States Senate, California Department of Managed Health Care, California Department of Insurance, Colorado state regulators, Washington state regulators and Connecticut state regulators. For more information you can see these articles: Aetna settles suit alleging claim-denying medical director never read patient’s records; Leading Senate Democrats want answers from Aetna CEO; California launches investigation following stunning admission by Aetna medical director; Aetna inquiry widens over ex-medical director’s comments; When insurers require patients to stop treatment.
  • Forcing Kaiser to stop systemically denying Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and speech therapy to children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This decision impacted 45,000 kids with Kaiser insurance and provided a $9,290,000 settlement for class members and autism research. For this case, Scott was given California Lawyer Magazine’s California Attorney Lawyer of the Year (CLAY) award and was a finalist for the 2014 Consumer Attorney of the Year Award from the Consumer Attorneys of California.
  • Getting Kaiser to provide over 100,000 California members living with severe mental illness access to medically necessary residential treatment as part of a court-approved class action settlement.
  • Recovering roughly $25 million from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California based on their misleading California members about the doctors within their networks.
  • Exposing how insurance companies systematically pressure hospitals to discharge patients with severe, and often fatal, eating disorders. His case put insurance companies on notice that they can no longer victimize young women without suffering serious consequences. For this case, Scott won Consumer Attorneys of California 2008 Street Fighter of the Year award. This award is given to a lawyer who helped create a more just society by overcoming incredible odds and without regard to profit or personal benefit.

Q&A

OVERVIEW

We may live in a “David vs. Goliath” world, but my firm is here to hold major corporations accountable for putting their bottom line profits ahead of peoples’ lives. I am a skilled trial lawyer on a mission to make a real difference in my clients’ lives and change the system so that others will not needlessly suffer similar fates.

My practice emphasizes civil trial law, including insurance bad faith, catastrophic personal injury, and health-related cases. Our insurance cases include fighting a wide range of battles with health, life, disability, property and liability insurers. We get justice for our clients and hold the wrongdoers accountable.

YOU DON’T PAY US UNLESS WE WIN.

Because clients are frequently also fighting for their financial lives, we often work on a contingency basis, so clients don’t pay us anything until and unless we win your case through a verdict or settlement. If we don’t win, you don’t pay us anything.

WHAT SETS OUR FIRM APART?

• Experience Working on the Other Side - I formerly worked in large corporate law firms defending insurance companies in bad faith lawsuits. Because I understand how they think and operate, I can frequently stay one step ahead of their legal strategy.

• Well Respected and Solid Reputation – Many of my cases are referred by other attorneys who are aware of my insurance expertise and reputation for out-working the defendants’ legion of corporate lawyers. That’s also why opposing attorneys take notice when I’m on the other side — they know they’re in for a fight.

• Personal and Caring Client Attention - I take very few cases so I can personally devote a tremendous amount of time and care to each client. I get to know my clients, their families, and the real story behind their suffering. Unlike many law firms, I do not run an assembly line law firm that delegates cases to dozens of associates and focuses on quick settlements to pay associates’ salaries and cover massive office overhead. Instead, I rely a focused team of people I know I can count on, and I serve as the lead attorney on every case.

• Passion, Commitment and Hard Work – I take pride in the passion and integrity I bring to every case, but please don’t take my word for it. Take a few minutes to view the testimonials from clients in some of my recent cases.

• Successful Track Record - Even though I approach every case from a humanistic point of view, results speak louder than words in the field of law. I’m proud to say I’ve compiled a solid record of positive financial results for my clients, while providing the high level of personal care and support that provide me with invaluable emotional satisfaction.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to help people who have been wronged. We promise to our clients that we care about you and your cause, we will listen to you, support you, be available for you, be responsive to you, empower you, and always put your needs first. We will be honest with you, treat you with dignity and respect, and fearlessly and boldly fight like hell for you.We promise to fight for what is right, only take cases that we believe in, expose wrongdoing, and make our community better. We will do everything we can to always be the best prepared, win through exposing the truth, and provide the best lawyering possible. We will constantly grow, learn and improve to become the best giant slayers we can be.

IF RESULTS MATTER, HIRE OUR FIRM.

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH LAW OFFICES OF SCOTT GLOVSKY?

WE LISTEN

We work with families and children that face all sorts of terrible situations. We care about you and your loss. The case is all about you, your loss, your harm, your family, and your life. Because your situation is unique, we can’t possibly fight for your rights if we don’t truly and carefully listen to you.

WE PREPARE THE FACTS & HEART OF YOUR CASE

Once we fully understand your situation, we start to prepare the facts of your case. We carefully investigate and document these facts. We interview witnesses. We may call on experts such as medical professionals to help assess your physical harms, economic experts to help assess your financial harms and engineers and accident reconstruction experts to help assess how and why an accident occurred. We also prepare the heart of your case – the story of the incident and how the injuries have impacted you and your family. We establish the good guys and the bad guys. We want to show how the bad guys harmed the good guys. We may test our approach with focus groups and mock juries.

WE APPLY THE LAW TO THE FACTS OF YOUR CASE

We analyze the law relative to your case and apply the law in the most effective way to the facts of your case. There can be hundreds of legal issues involved in a case. Most of these issues are addressed in court pleadings and motions. Issues include jurisdiction, proper causes of action, what evidence can be heard, which witnesses will testify, and jury instructions. It is important to think about how different a case may be prepared by an experienced trial attorney versus an attorney who wants to settle out of court. What is second nature to an experienced trial attorney may play little role in the thinking of a non-trial attorney. A trial attorney is more likely to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your case if it goes to trial. And a trial attorney will have more experience in highlighting your case’s strengths at trial and the other side’s weaknesses.

WE DEVELOP STRATEGY & TACTICS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING

Cases can be settled out of court or at trial. Trial attorneys have experience with both; non-trial attorneys don’t. Inexperienced trial attorneys may be using your case a guinea pig – experimenting. We develop a strategy and tactics to maximize your recovery of damages. Because we have extensive trial experience and a history of taking complex cases to trial, the other side and their attorneys know we mean business.

WE WILL HELP YOU MANAGE MEDIA & PUBLIC RELATIONS

We’re experienced in working with the media and helping you navigate the media. In seeking justice, our clients are often interested in sharing their stories with the media. They want to prevent what happened to them or their loved ones from happening again. Many of our clients want to change how an industry behaves. They want to make an organization care about their patients and customers so that similar injuries and harms can be prevented in the future. Some want to remain private. Whatever your preference, we help you.

WE LOVE GOING TO TRIAL

We’re trial lawyers. We try cases and we win. The other side fears good trial attorneys more than anything because experienced trial attorneys can create large jury verdicts. Large verdicts can ruin everything on the other side. They create fear in the other side because they impact the profitability of the organizations involved: the liable company, their insurance companies, and their attorneys. Insurance companies and their lawyers aren’t afraid to fight with non-trial attorneys. They often are with good trial attorneys.

Taking legal action can be a big step. We’ll provide you with information to help you make the right decision for you and your family.
