Biography

Ryan P. Bates focuses on appellate and complex commercial litigation, which includes serving as lead counsel in numerous appellate matters before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fifth, Sixth, and Tenth Circuits, as well as courts across Texas.

Prior to his legal career, Mr. Bates spent years working as an information technology specialist for companies across various industries while leading software development and consulting projects.

He previously served as a clerk for the Honorable David M. Ebel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit before joining a Texas litigation boutique and leading his own practice, prior to joining Botkin Chiarello Calaf.

Mr. Bates is a summa cum laude from Duke Law School, where he earned the Willis Smith Award for best academic record and the Faculty Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Constitutional Law and Civil Rights, in addition to being elected to the Order of the Coif. He also served as Articles Editor of the Duke Law Journal and as Speaker Series Editor for the inaugural volume of the Duke Journal of Constitutional Law and Public Policy.
