PROFESIONAL EXPERIENCE

Between june 2008 and march 2020, he was Head of Tax & Legal at BDO in Chile.

Between 1999 and 2004, he served as attorney for the Department for the application and interpretation of International Tax Rules at the Chilean Internal Revenue Service (SII) and negotiator of agreements to avoid double taxation. In those years, the main agreements were negotiated and have been enacted in recent years.

He was a representative of Chile of O.E.C.D. (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) for the Global Forum on Taxation in Paris, France and in Mexico City, Mexico. Consultant to the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) for Nicaragua and the Tax Administration of Peru (SUNAT).

He is a member of the Chilean Bar Association, the "International Fiscal Association" (IFA) and the Chilean Institute of Tax Law, where he was the President from 2013 to 2017.

Professor of Tax Law at Universidad Jesuita Alberto Hurtado. Professor at “Universidad de Santiago (USACH)” and "LLM UC, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC)" of International Tax Planning at the Master Programs.

He has been an ad-honorem Counselor of the Chilean Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from 2008 to 2014.

Tell us a little bit about your practice and what makes it unique.

We have been noticing that the clients value from us as thier advisors to be available 24/7, people who are involved in their business and have innovative solutions. BLTA provides all the professionals who are required including lawyers, business administration, accountants (CPAs) and auditors as an interdisciplinary team.

What common questions are you asked by clients, and what are your answers?

Q: Which is the more efficient corporate organization in Chile?
A: SpA, company divided per shares.
Q: Is the taxation is the same in all the corporate structures?
A: In general, the taxation system is the same.
Q: Has the SMEs a special tax treatment?
A: Yes, they has the most favored tax treatment with a cash tax base and a reduced tax rate, between other incentives.
Q: Which is the financial statements standards in Chile?
A: In 2010, Chile has adopted IFRS, and also IFRS for SMEs.
Q: What is better, to have the bookkeeping inside the Company or to outsourcing it?
A: Depends on the administrative procedures applicable to your company and the amount and complexities of the transactions.

Describe one of your most interesting or memorable cases in the past year.

A foreign fond was looking for a Real Estate Company who operates in Chile, Colombia and Peru to propose a merge. One of our clients fulfilled their requirements and we began to assist in all the aspects of the transaction. Finally, the merger is a successful story.

What is most challenging about your area(s) of expertise?

The world is changing, to adapt and to change along we provide a critical analysis of the business environment, tax and financial information, contributing to the discussion of public policies that seek the best solutions for the benefit of the economy. At the same time, the new era requires to understand the markets and be leaders of our fields.

Chile is a small and open market, which is recognized for its strong commitment towards the international relationship and domestic development. We are focused in helping the companies to reach their goals in Chile and internationally.

Anything else you’d like to share?

We offer to legal, tax and financial certifications to SMEs companies, This is especially required for Fintech , startup and unicorn companies because they are the ones that are constantly undertaking and innovating and need corporate, tax and legal health check services, which allow them to go to the financial system, or their counterparties, demonstrating that they are fully in compliance.
