Bob Schmidt joined Kean Miller in 2016 and is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he focuses his practice on Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law and related tax matters. He has represented employers for more than 40 years, advising organizations of all sizes on the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of pension plans and other employee benefit arrangements. Earlier in his career, Bob served as an attorney-adviser with the United States Tax Court in Washington, DC. His practice includes assisting employers with regulatory compliance, plan documentation, and the administration of qualified and nonqualified benefit plans. He maintains a pre-approved defined contribution plan that may be used to meet client needs and has drafted thousands of plans for publicly traded and privately held companies, as well as government and tax-exempt employers.
Throughout his private practice career, Bob has concentrated on employee benefits and tax law matters, including executive compensation and deferred compensation arrangements. He regularly advises employers on plan maintenance, investment-related requirements, fiduciary considerations, and plan termination issues. Bob is Board Certified in Tax Law by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization and was part of the initial group of attorneys in Louisiana to receive tax law certification. He has also served on the specialization board, contributing to the development of tax law standards within the state.
