Biography

Richard M. Steigman is a partner at Gair, Gair, Conason, Rubinowitz, Bloom, Hershenhorn, Steigman & Mackauf, where he represents plaintiffs in complex personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including case development and preparation, trial, complex legal motion practice, and appeals in New York State and federal courts.

In 2027, Steigman was named Best Lawyers® “Lawyer of the Year” for Personal Injury Litigation – Plaintiffs in New York City. This marks his second “Lawyer of the Year” recognition, following his selection as the 2022 Best Lawyers® “Lawyer of the Year” for Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs in New York City. He has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® since 2010.

Most recently, Steigman served with the firm’s Managing Partner, Ben B. Rubinowitz, as lead trial counsel for the plaintiffs in the landmark litigation arising from the 2015 Metro-North Valhalla train crash, the deadliest accident in Metro-North Railroad history. Following a six-week liability trial in Westchester County, the jury found Metro-North 71% responsible for the collision. The liability victory ultimately paved the way for settlements exceeding $182 million for the families of five passengers who were killed and dozens of passengers who were injured.

Steigman was also part of the trial team with Rubinowitz and partner Jeffrey B. Bloom that obtained a $120 million medical malpractice verdict in Westchester County for a 41-year-old husband and father who suffered catastrophic brain damage after a basilar artery stroke was not timely diagnosed and treated. The verdict was ranked the #1 verdict in New York State across all practice areas in 2023.

Throughout his career, Steigman has contributed to numerous multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements involving catastrophic personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death and other complex claims. His appellate work has also played an important role in significant recoveries for the firm’s clients, including successfully handling an appeal in a wrongful death case involving a pedestrian struck by a truck that ultimately resulted in a $26 million settlement.

Steigman has tried cases throughout the New York metropolitan area and has argued appeals in both state and federal courts. His combination of trial and appellate experience has made him a resource for attorneys confronting complex questions of New York personal injury and medical malpractice law.

He has lectured to members of the legal profession through organizations including the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and Practising Law Institute and has spoken to law students at Hofstra University and Cardozo School of Law.

Steigman attended Franklin & Marshall College and graduated with distinction from Hofstra University School of Law, where he was a member of the Hofstra Law Review. His relationship with Gair, Gair, Conason, Rubinowitz, Bloom, Hershenhorn, Steigman & Mackauf began before he became an attorney, when he worked at the firm as a paralegal. He joined the firm as an attorney in 1997 and later became a partner.

His professional memberships include the New York State Bar Association, American Association for Justice and New York State Trial Lawyers Association.
