Rainer Viktor has been active in Intellectual Property Law and Technology Law since beginning his training at VOSSIUS & PARTNER in Munich in 1995. He was admitted as a German Patent Attorney (Patentanwalt) and European Trademark Attorney in 1998 and as a European Patent Attorney in 1999. In 2000, he became a partner at Vossius & Partner Patentanwälte Rechtsanwälte mbB.
Based in Munich, Mr. Viktor advises companies, research institutions, and start-ups on intellectual property matters, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the European Patent Office (EPO) and national authorities. His work frequently involves technologies such as medical devices, healthcare products, software, bioinformatics, business methods, telecommunications, and electronic systems.
His practice includes opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office as well as matters involving patent infringement and revocation. He has experience working with standards-related patents in the telecommunications sector and regularly supports clients in matters that combine Intellectual Property Law with Technology Law considerations.
Mr. Viktor manages patent portfolios for a range of organizations, including start-up companies working in green energy, automotive simulation technology, and digital imaging software. His clients include multinational corporations, established technology companies, universities, and university-affiliated start-ups.
He represents clients before the European Patent Office (EPO), the German Patent and Trademark Office, the Federal Patent Court (Bundespatentgericht), the German district courts (Landgerichte), and the Federal Supreme Court (Bundesgerichtshof, BGH).
Mr. Viktor studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with a focus on high-voltage engineering and electrical power engineering. Before joining VOSSIUS & PARTNER, he worked as an engineer at Reyrolle Ltd. in the United Kingdom.
He is the author of the book “Re-establishment of Rights Proceedings at the EPO” (“From Loss to Life”), published in January 2017, which discusses the European Patent Office’s case law concerning re-establishment of rights. He is also a co-author of Kluwer’s Concise European Patent Law.
Mr. Viktor regularly lectures on business methods and software-related inventions and provides training in Germany and internationally on the European Patent Office’s problem-solution approach.
