Rachel Schechter practices in all areas of workplace law, with a strong emphasis on privacy, data governance, cybersecurity, access to information, artificial intelligence, and related disputes. Rachel is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (Canada), Certified in Cybersecurity (ISC2), and is recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada for her work in Privacy and Data Security Law.
Rachel’s practice encompasses all aspects of privacy and data governance; she advises public and private sector organizations with respect to compliance, development of policies and procedures, PIAs, access requests, incident response planning, AI usage, and the implications of adopting novel products, services, and technologies. Rachel acts in inquiries before the Information and Privacy Commissioner, and in related judicial review proceedings. She acts as breach counsel in cybersecurity incidents, including ransomware attacks and business email compromise, helping clients manage forensic investigations, develop crisis communications, and manage notification, reporting, and legal risk.
Rachel’s dispute resolution experience includes commercial litigation, human rights, defamation, complex tort claims, intellectual property, and professional negligence. She has appeared before all levels of Court in British Columbia and the Federal Court.
Rachel is the Vice Chair of the CBABC Women Lawyers Forum, and the Past Chair of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Section Executive. Outside of law, Rachel is a wine enthusiast, and can be found hosting dinners, antiquing, enjoying live music, and spending as much time as possible outdoors with her two dogs.
