Porter Elliott is a partner in Van Bael & Bellis' Brussels office. He specialises in all aspects of competition law, with particular expertise in merger control proceedings. He has successfully represented clients in numerous complex cases before the European Commission as well as national competition authorities in Europe and elsewhere. He also regularly counsels clients on matters involving cartel investigations, dominant market positions and the analysis of agreements under the EU competition rules. His practice covers a range of industries, including aerospace, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, forestry products and petrochemicals.
Porter’s experience in EU merger control includes leading the successful opposition to the 2010 joint venture between BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, which received the Global Competition Review Matter of the Year award in 2010. He also acted as lead counsel to Skype in the unconditional EU approval of its acquisition by Microsoft, which also received the Global Competition Review Matter of the Year award for Europe, this time in 2011.
He regularly lectures and writes on competition law matters with a particular emphasis on merger control law.
Porter also conducts training sessions on merger control issues for national competition authorities.

Porter Elliott is the co-editor of The European Lawyers' Reference Guide on Merger Control, now in its 2nd edition, and the author of the EU chapter in the Chambers Legal Practice Guide on Merger Control (Chambers & Partners Publishing, 2014). He is also a key contributor to Van Bael & Bellis’ leading treatise “Competition Law of the European Community” (fifth edition, Kluwer, 2010), a standard work of reference in the field of EU competition law. He was the original editor of the Van Bael & Bellis newsletter on Competition Law and, from 1995 to 1996 he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law.
In addition to speaking at major conferences, Porter Elliott lectures annually at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel's Program on International Legal Co-operation. He also frequently teaches in the Erasmus program.
