Philip A. Bareck is a shareholder with Katz, Friedman, Eisenstein, Johnson, Bareck & Bertuca PC in Chicago, Illinois. He joined the firm in 1991, became a partner in 2003, and a shareholder in 2007. His practice is focused on Workers’ Compensation Law - Claimants, representing injured workers throughout Illinois in workers’ compensation and occupational disease matters. Philip also serves as an Adjunct Professor at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he teaches Workers’ Compensation Law. In addition, he was inducted into the College of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Over the course of his career, Philip has represented thousands of injured employees before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission, as well as Illinois circuit and appellate courts. He has handled cases involving traumatic injuries, repetitive stress injuries, occupational diseases, and claims requiring ongoing medical care and future treatment benefits. His work includes taking depositions of physicians and medical professionals to help protect the rights of injured workers and pursue benefits available under Illinois law.
Philip has represented clients in claims involving employers and companies across Illinois, including Caterpillar, Fiat-Chrysler, Knapheide, the State of Illinois/Illinois Veterans Home, UTC Hamilton-Sundstrand, AT&T, Comcast, Gardner-Denver Machinery, Mueller Company, Ipsen, Inc., Home Depot, and employers throughout Quincy, Illinois. He regularly advocates for employees facing complex workplace injury and occupational disease claims.
In 2016, Philip obtained a notable appellate court decision in Dunteman v. Caterpillar, in which the court determined that an employee’s self-treatment at home for a work-related injury that worsened the condition remained covered under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act. Following the decision, he spoke to attorney groups regarding the impact of the case in Illinois and was interviewed and quoted by Work Comp Central concerning the ruling.
Philip has also received recognition from legal publications and attorney organizations for his work in workers’ compensation law and his representation of injured workers in Illinois.
