Attorney Barone received his Bachelors of Science in Biology from Oakland University. He then went on to the Detroit College of Law, now Michigan State University Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1991.
Because of his extensive knowledge regarding DUI law, Attorney Barone has authored two books on how to defend drinking drivers, in addition to writing articles on the topic for the country’s top legal publications. He is the Executive Editor for DWI Journal: Law & Science, the only publication of its kind that is dedicated to providing valuable information for other DUI attorneys throughout the nation.
Attorney Barone shares his knowledge with a new generation of lawyers as an Adjunct Professor at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he teaches a course on “Drunk Driving Law and Practice.” In this course, he goes teaches students about the science involved in DUI law, such as alcohol metabolism, and blood, breath, and field sobriety testing. He also instructs students on how to apply this information in court room by incorporating trial practice skills into the class material.
Attorney Barone was appointed as one of only three moderators for Michigan’s DUI listserve. He is also an active participant in a National DUI listserve. These listserves serve as a place for the top DUI attorneys to share information and ideas about drunk-driving defense.
Attorney Barone is a member of several professional organizations. These include: the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Michigan Bar Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was recently honored with a unanimous nomination to the position of sustaining member by the Board of Regents for the National College of DUI Defense.
Knowing how important it is to understand law enforcement procedures, Attorney Barone has been certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the International Association of Chiefs of Police as an instructor of the standardized field sobriety tests. This certification gives him the ability to successfully review and defend his client’s DUI/OWI cases.
Attorney Barone has also attended a 24-hour certification course conducted by the National Patent Corporation, which manufactures the DataMaster. The DataMaster is the breath-testing machine used by the State of Michigan. He was deemed competent to operate and perform calibration checks on this machine. There are very few attorneys that have gone through this intense training, which allows Attorney Barone to point out the flaws in his client’s breath test results.
Attorney Barone attended and successfully passed a proficiency based Forensic Blood and Urine seminar at Emory University in November 2008. This seminar consisted of more than 46 hours of scientific and legal training and included a laboratory tour where various gas chromatography instruments where inspected and their use demonstrated and explained. World renowned Toxicologist Dr. A.W. Jones was on faculty for this seminar, as was Mr. Barone, who lectured on various forensic legal issues. At the conclusion of the seminar students were required to take and pass a comprehensive written examination. No other Michigan lawyers attended or taught at this Forensic Blood and Urine Seminar.
