Nicholas McHaffie is a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property and Competition & Foreign Investment Groups. He practices in the area of litigation, with a primary emphasis on intellectual property, public law, administrative/regulatory and commercial matters. Nick has appeared before the Courts at all levels, including the trial and appeal levels of both the Ontario Court and the Federal Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as before numerous administrative tribunals such as the Competition Tribunal, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal the Copyright Board, the Patented Medicines Prices Review Board and the Trademarks Opposition Board.
Nick speaks regularly on matters of advocacy, administrative law and intellectual property issues. He sits on the Editorial Board of the Commercial Litigation and Arbitration Review. Nick taught Administrative Law and Civil Procedure at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Common Law from 2003 to 2009 as a part-time professor, and formerly taught Civil Trial Advocacy at Queen’s University, Faculty of Law, as a special lecturer from 2000 to 2003. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, The Advocates’ Society and the County of Carleton Lawyers Association.
Nick clerked for The Right Honourable Madam Justice Beverley McLachlin of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1994-95.
