Niall Rand is a litigation and dispute resolution lawyer in Fasken’s Vancouver office with extensive experience in the regulation of the energy, utility, mining, natural resources, transportation, and insurance industries. Niall also assists clients in obtaining approvals for major projects and facilities, including navigating Indigenous legal issues in Canada in a practical and respectful manner. He is the Past President of the Vancouver Bar Association, which serves lawyers and the legal community in the Vancouver area.

Niall recognizes that the effective management of complex multi-year litigation necessitates a strategic approach, as well as a deep understanding of the regulatory environment and the businesses of the clients he represents. His clients value his practical advice, which is responsive to broader (and often multi-faceted) corporate priorities and the rapid evolution of regulation and public policy. He has extensive experience working with professionals and experts across a diverse range of disciplines, including engineers, economists, accountants, scientists, and historians.

Niall has represented clients in mediations, before all levels of Court in British Columbia, in Federal Court and various regulatory tribunals. His experience as counsel for major gas and electric utilities before the British Columbia Utilities Commission includes proceedings related to setting rates and rate design, the development of major projects and facilities, thermal and renewable energy solutions, commission-initiated inquiries, and demand-side management, amongst others.

Niall brings diverse international experience to Fasken, having studied law at Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom, as well as working and volunteering abroad before becoming a lawyer. He completed a master’s degree in law at the University of British Columbia with a focus on Indigenous, environmental and regulatory law.
