Neal Nusholtz is a tax attorney with more than 40 years of legal experience advising individuals, businesses, and fiduciaries on complex tax matters. Based in Troy, Michigan, he practices at Kemp Klein and represents clients in matters involving Tax Law, Litigation and Controversy – Tax, and Trusts and Estates. His work includes guidance on federal and state tax issues, audits, administrative proceedings, and tax-related disputes.
Mr. Nusholtz assists clients with income tax matters, estate and gift taxation, estate planning considerations, business transactions and planning, probate matters, and trust administration. He also represents taxpayers in IRS administrative appeals, audits, and tax litigation in venues including the U.S. Tax Court, Federal District Courts, the Michigan Tax Tribunal, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Throughout his career, Mr. Nusholtz has handled a wide range of tax controversy matters, including federal and state tax litigation, appellate matters, administrative audits, and proceedings involving the IRS Collection Division. He has also represented clients in pre-indictment criminal tax matters and other sensitive tax-related disputes.
In addition to his client work, Mr. Nusholtz participates in several committees of the State Bar of Michigan. He frequently lectures for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education and has written on topics including trusts, estates, federal income taxation, and legal history. Two of his articles were published in the 2017 Journal of the American Revolution (Westhome, Yardley, 2017).
To remain closely connected to the practical application of tax law, Mr. Nusholtz continues to prepare approximately 150–200 income tax returns each year, along with estate and gift tax returns and payroll tax filings.
Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Nusholtz enjoys photography, videography, studying history, and building computers.
