His practice encompasses all areas of intellectual property law, with a specialization in identifying, procuring, and enforcing patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. He brings particular depth in preparing and prosecuting medical device and mechanical patent applications in the United States and abroad. His expertise extends to providing comprehensive freedom to operate, infringement, noninfringement, invalidity, and validity opinions, as well as maintaining vigilant monitoring of competitor intellectual property and products. Mike serves as U.S. counsel for numerous international companies and regularly assists attorneys worldwide on U.S. intellectual property practice and law, reflecting his commitment to helping others succeed in complex IP matters.
As Chairman of the Firm's Patent Prosecution Practice Group, Mike leads initiatives focused on excellence and continuous improvement in patent prosecution strategies. His dedication to staying at the forefront of evolving IP law and emerging technologies ensures that clients receive the most current and effective counsel available.
Before joining the Firm, Mike built a strong foundation in the medical device industry, where he helped some of the world's largest medical device companies manage their IP portfolios and monitor competitor activity. He designed comprehensive strategies to identify competitors' infringing products and collaborated with engineers and researchers to develop innovative solutions that designed around competitors' patents. Earlier in his career, he conducted materials science research at Los Alamos National Laboratory and gained hands on manufacturing experience, providing him with deep technical insight that continues to enhance his legal practice.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike's commitment to family and community is deeply woven into who he is. He and his wife, Kathy, are actively involved in the foster care system, where they currently support several foster families after having served as licensed foster parents to numerous children. This dedication to helping vulnerable families reflects his broader commitment to improving society and assisting others in need.
A passionate advocate for developing the next generation of intellectual property attorneys, Mike volunteers as a coach and practice judge for the IU Maurer School of Law national IP Moot Court teams and serves as a guest lecturer at the law school, embodying his values of mentorship, competency, and education.
