Before diving into the creation of an estate plan, it’s critical to take the time to understand the client and their wishes, concerns, and special requirements. That’s why clients trust Michael Klaray; whether he is creating a will with provisions for a disabled child, updating a will following a death or separation, or managing intergenerational transfers of wealth, and transfer of the family farm and family business, Michael’s approach lets each client feel they have been heard, understood, and involved in the creation of an estate plan tailored to their needs.

Michael’s practice is focused on estates, including planning, administration, adult incapacity, elder issues and litigation. By drawing on his understanding of taxes, businesses, corporate law, farming, and family law, Michael effectively meets the needs of each client’s unique circumstances. His years of experience in his field give him a comprehensive understanding of estates, how to prepare for transfers of wealth, and tax efficiency, all while avoiding any potential future legal challenges.

Son of a Hungarian immigrant, Michael was raised and educated in Edmonton and is a proud Edmontonian. He primarily works with Albertan’s from Red Deer north, but loves working with all Albertans, including business owners, farmers, professionals, individuals with disabled family members, variety of groups from various cultures and backgrounds; pretty much anyone who wants his help. As part of a full service firm, Michael is able to offer assistance with the most complex corporate reorganizations to the sale of a residential home.

Michael’s estate planning services include the preparation of wills, personal directives, powers of attorney, and all forms of trusts. He also offers a range of estate administration services for executors, including general advice, next steps, executor’s duties, and tax filings. Michael has relationships with a number of professionals to assist clients with whatever they might need.

Beneficiaries, estate executors, charities, estate creditors, and aggrieved family members all turn to Michael for experienced representation if a dispute arises. He has advised on estate litigation matters involving defending a will or estate, addressing people with disabilities, guardianships, and trusteeships, powers of attorney and personal directives. While prepared to litigate, Michael believes it is appropriate in many cases to look at softer solutions such as mediation.

Michael is Co-Chair of the firm’s Estates Practice Group and a respected leader in the field of estate planning. He currently teaches Wills and Estate Administration at the University of Alberta Law School and in the past has chaired the Canadian Bar Association Wills and Estates and Elder Law North Sections. He is a frequent speaker on estate planning for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, and accounting and investment industry groups.

An avid traveler, season ticket holder of the Oilers, Elks (one day hopes to add Fulham FC), endurance athlete, history buff, and reader, Michael enjoys his time away from work at his camp in Lake of the Woods, Ontario.
