Michael Klaray

Michael Klaray is a lawyer with Duncan Craig LLP in Edmonton, Alberta, whose practice focuses on Trusts and Estates. He takes time to understand each client’s wishes, concerns, family circumstances, and planning priorities before developing an estate plan. Whether preparing a will that includes provisions for a child with a disability, updating a will after a death or separation, or planning the intergenerational transfer of wealth, a family farm, or a family business, Michael works with clients to develop plans that reflect their circumstances and objectives.

Michael’s practice includes estate planning, estate administration, adult incapacity matters, elder law, and estate litigation. His background in tax, business, corporate law, farming, and family law allows him to consider the legal and practical issues that can affect an estate plan. He helps clients prepare for the transfer of wealth, address tax considerations, and identify issues that may arise in the future.

Born to a Hungarian immigrant, Michael was raised and educated in Edmonton and is proud to serve clients throughout Alberta. He primarily works with clients from Red Deer north, including business owners, farmers, professionals, individuals with family members who have disabilities, and people from a wide range of cultural and personal backgrounds. As part of a full-service law firm, Michael works with colleagues on matters ranging from corporate reorganizations to residential real estate transactions.

Michael’s estate planning services include preparing wills, personal directives, powers of attorney, and a variety of trusts. He also advises executors on estate administration, including their duties, required next steps, tax filings, and other responsibilities. When appropriate, Michael works with other professional advisors to help address the legal, financial, and tax considerations involved in estate planning and administration.

Michael advises beneficiaries, executors, charities, estate creditors, and family members when estate disputes arise. His experience includes matters involving the interpretation or defence of a will or estate plan, individuals with disabilities, guardianships, trusteeships, powers of attorney, and personal directives. Although litigation may be necessary in some circumstances, Michael also considers negotiation and mediation where those approaches may help resolve a dispute.

Michael is Co-Chair of Duncan Craig LLP’s Estates Practice Group. He teaches Wills and Estate Administration at the University of Alberta Law School and has previously chaired the Canadian Bar Association’s Wills and Estates and Elder Law North Sections. He regularly speaks about estate planning to the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and accounting and investment industry groups.

Outside his legal practice, Michael enjoys travelling, attending Oilers and Elks games, following Fulham FC, participating in endurance sports, studying history, and reading. He spends time at his camp in Lake of the Woods, Ontario.
