Michael C. Lewis

Based in Troy, Michigan, Mike represents businesses, insurers, and individuals in a broad range of civil litigation matters through his work with August Law PLLC.

Licensed to practice law since 1998, Mike has built a litigation career that includes representing both plaintiffs and defendants in complex and high-stakes disputes. Early in his career, he was part of a small team of Michigan attorneys representing a Fortune 500 company in multidistrict toxic tort litigation. His work included assisting with litigation pending in Michigan state courts and collaborating with national coordinating counsel on discovery and pretrial matters connected to federal multidistrict litigation.

Over the course of his practice, Mike has managed a wide variety of litigation matters, including commercial litigation, insurance defense, general liability claims, no-fault disputes, medical malpractice claims, wrongful death actions, construction disputes, fire loss claims, patent infringement matters, and cases involving 42 USC 1983. He has also handled matters involving the Death on the High Seas Act. Mike has served as first-chair trial counsel in approximately fifteen jury trials and has represented clients in numerous arbitration proceedings.

Mike is admitted to practice before all Michigan state courts, the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

The son of a Detroit police officer, Mike grew up on the east side of Detroit. He attended Wayne State University on scholarship and graduated magna cum laude in 1994. While at Wayne State, he was a successful policy debater and worked as a researcher for United States District Court Judge Avern Cohn. Mike later attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, primarily as a night student, and won the school’s annual G. Mennen Williams Moot Court Competition in 1996.

Mike has worked closely with Gary August for more than two decades on a variety of significant litigation matters, including litigation related to the Wayne County Consolidated Jail Project. Their professional approach emphasizes preparation, professionalism, cooperation, and efficiency in order to help clients navigate complex disputes effectively.

Outside of his legal practice, Mike remains active in the community and has previously run for local political office. He and his wife support a number of charitable and cultural organizations, including Forgotten Harvest and the Detroit Institute of Arts. His personal interests include literature, economics, politics, sports, and swimming. Mike and his wife, Kristi, are proud parents of two children, John and Clare.
