Michael has experience in labour and employment law, focusing on advising and representing employers and executives in all aspects of the employee-employer relationship. He is experienced in drafting, implementing, modifying and enforcing contracts and policies, responding to wrongful dismissals, human rights and employment standards complaints, conducting and overseeing workplace investigations, advising on employer duties and best practices in accommodation, and return to work compliance. He also regularly provides independent legal advice to executives in negotiating employment agreements and assisting them in enforcing their rights and advising on their obligations upon departure.
A formidable force in both the courtroom and the boardroom, Michael is skilled in navigating difficult situations to find the best result, whether at trial or through a negotiated settlement. He is particularly adept at determining the appropriate strategy while avoiding spending unnecessary time and resources, reviewing matters first to determine the likely legal outcome, then taking action. As a litigator, Michael has over 300 days of diverse trial and appellant experience. He has appeared before the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Federal Court (Trial Division), the Federal Court of Appeal, and various Boards and Tribunals while acting for administrative bodies and for clients defending their rights in administrative proceedings.

He appreciates the bottom-line impact and tailors his advice towards furthering business objectives and management priorities as efficiently as possible.
