Matthew Devine is partner at White & Case in Chicago. He is a first-chair civil litigator and trial lawyer who represents clients in matters in state and federal courts throughout the country. His practice focuses on heavily litigated aspects of business law, particularly class action defense, trade secrets and high-stakes "mass raid" cases, as well as representing corporate clients in responding to inquiries and subpoenas from government regulators. He frequently handles highly sensitive matters involving reputational risk and media attention.
In his class action practice, Matthew has posted a string of victories, winning dismissal with prejudice of several closely watched putative class action lawsuits in the media spotlight. Matthew has also served as lead counsel for Fortune 500 companies and other clients in a variety of high-profile business litigation matters, including serving as counsel to the court-appointed examiner in a major corporate bankruptcy arising from the 2008 financial crisis, representing a major global airline in litigation arising out of an airline disaster and recently defeating class action matters against a Big Ten university and a global financial services company.
Mr. Devine has an active pro bono practice representing indigent criminal defendants in state and federal court. Mr. Devine was recognized by his peers in Best Lawyers in America 2023, for consumer litigation. Illinois Super Lawyers has repeatedly named Matthew a "Super Lawyer." He received the Constitutional Rights Foundation's "Bill of Rights Award" for his work in national security litigation arising out of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
