Matt McPherson is a Partner at OKT. Matt advises First Nations and Indigenous governments and organizations across the country on Aboriginal and treaty rights claims and negotiations, resource development agreements, and environmental regulatory processes.

He has particular experience in matters related to the protection of fisheries and water. He advises on a wide variety of environmental matters, and appears before tribunals such as the Canadian Energy Regulator and land use planning bodies.

Matt frequently advises clients on the duty to consult and accommodate in situations ranging from impact and benefit agreements to cultural protection agreements with developers and governments. This includes advising Nations on strengthening their internal consultation systems and procedures, and on implementing protections for Indigenous knowledge systems.

He received his LL.B from the University of Victoria, and an MBA from York University, and he clerked at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Matt worked for an international advertising and strategy company.

He is a member of the Law Societies of Ontario and the Northwest Territories.

Matt is the co-editor of the 5th edition of the widely-used Aboriginal Law Handbook, and co-organizer of OKT’s annual Duty to Consult and Accommodate Workshop for First Nations. He is recognized as an expert in the field of Aboriginal Law by the Lexpert Directory.
