Matthew has over 25 years of China and Asia-Pacific legal and business experience, focusing on Intellectual Property (prosecution, litigation and transactions), Corporate (M&A) and International Trade. Matthew has been listed as a leading corporate/IP lawyer by various publishers and directories, and is an arbitrator (MCIArb) with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, the Beijing Arbitration Commission, Asian International Arbitration Centre, CIETAC, the Maldives International Arbitration Centre, the British Virgin Islands International Arbitration Centre, and the Thailand Arbitration Centre. Matthew is a regular contributor of articles on Chinese and IP law to major journals, and regularly teaches international IP and technology law at the post-graduate level at a number of leading universities. Prior to founding MMLC, Matthew led the Asia Pacific IP/IT Group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Earlier in his career, Matthew worked as a Judge's Associate in Queensland and continues to be listed in Who's Who in Business in Australia. On the pro bono side of things, Matthew has been appointed official Honorary Olympic Appeals Consultant on several occasions (including 2021/22), and been involved in a number of key research projects for the UNDP, World Justice Project, and the World Bank, focused on legal aid accessibility, rule of law and legal profession protections. Matthew completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Business at the Queensland University of Technology in 1993. He completed his Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Queensland, after studying Chinese commercial law at the University of Hong Kong. Matthew is admitted in Australia, Ireland/EU, England and Wales, and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, as well as the International Bar Association, and American Bar Association (Leadership). Matthew speaks, reads and writes Mandarin Chinese proficiently.
