Matt Maurer is a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group at Torkin Manes LLP and Chair of the firm’s Franchise and Cannabis Law Groups. Based in Toronto, Ontario, Matt advises businesses, entrepreneurs, and industry stakeholders on complex litigation, regulatory, and commercial matters, with a particular focus on Cannabis Law and franchise-related issues.
With nearly 20 years of experience, Matt represents clients in a broad range of commercial disputes, including shareholder matters, contractual disputes, regulatory proceedings, oppression remedy claims, and business torts. He has appeared before trial and appellate courts in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, and regularly represents clients in domestic and international arbitration proceedings. Matt is known for his practical and strategic approach to dispute resolution and advocacy.
In addition to his litigation practice, Matt serves as a mediator in commercial disputes. He earned his mediation accreditation from Harvard and works with parties to resolve matters involving commercial contracts, franchise disputes, cannabis-related conflicts, and other business disagreements. Clients value his measured and solutions-focused approach to negotiations and dispute resolution.
Matt maintains an active Cannabis Law practice, advising licensed producers, investors, entrepreneurs, retailers, and other participants in the cannabis sector on regulatory compliance, commercial agreements, business transactions, and disputes. He regularly counsels Canadian and international clients navigating the evolving legal and regulatory framework governing the cannabis industry.
Matt also advises franchisors and franchisees on a variety of franchise and commercial matters, including franchise disclosure documents, franchise agreements, business operations, and dispute resolution. His combined litigation and business law experience allows him to provide practical guidance tailored to the needs of growing businesses and established brands.
