Dr. Mathias Kleespies is a partner at Vossius & Partner Patentanwälte Rechtsanwälte mbB in Munich and heads the firm’s trademark and design department, a role he has held since 2007. His practice focuses on trademark, design, competition, and food law, with a significant emphasis on litigation and dispute resolution involving intellectual property rights.
Dr. Kleespies advises companies on the development, management, and protection of national and international trademark portfolios. His work includes preparing and implementing filing strategies for businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions. He regularly represents clients in litigation before civil courts and in invalidation and enforcement proceedings involving trademarks and design rights. His practice also involves unfair competition matters and customs-related proceedings connected to intellectual property enforcement.

Dr. Kleespies studied law at the Universities of Münster, Dresden, and Exeter in the United Kingdom. He earned a Ph.D. in Corporate Law and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Intellectual Property Law.
He is co-editor and author of the practitioner handbooks on German, European, and international trademark and design law, including “Formularkommentar Markenrecht” and “Formularkommentar Designrecht.” In addition to his legal practice, he frequently lectures on trademark and design law topics.
Dr. Kleespies is a member of several professional organizations, including INTA, ECTA, PTMG, MARQUES, and GRUR. From his base in Munich, he works with clients on intellectual property strategy and litigation matters involving trademarks, designs, and related rights.
