Biography

Marie Anne Martin practises family law in Westmount, Quebec, and is the Managing Partner of Goldwater Droit. She has been recognized by Best Lawyers for her work in Family Law, based on peer reviews from members of the legal community practising in the same area.

Her practice covers a broad range of family law matters, including divorce and separation proceedings, contested custody and support disputes, cohabitation and marriage contracts, and the division of family assets and property. She regularly represents clients in high-conflict parenting matters involving psychological evidence, parental alienation allegations, and disputes concerning a child’s stated preferences and best interests.

Marie Anne also focuses on complex financial issues arising from separation and divorce. Her work includes matters involving the partition of family patrimony, spousal support, contested agreements, hidden or disputed assets, and financially significant negotiations and litigation.

She has appeared before the Superior Court of Quebec and the Quebec Court of Appeal in a variety of family law proceedings. Her approach to litigation is methodical and detail-oriented, with careful preparation tailored to the specific dynamics of each case.

As Managing Partner of Goldwater Droit, Marie Anne oversees the firm’s day-to-day operations and collaborates with the founding partner on the firm’s strategic direction and development.

Before entering the legal profession, Marie Anne completed a B.Sc. in Pharmacology-Physiology at the Université de Sherbrooke in 2011. Her scientific background continues to inform her work with medical and psychological evidence in family law proceedings. She later obtained her LL.B. from the Université de Montréal in 2015, completed her articling term under the supervision of Me Marie-Hélène Dubé (now Justice Marie-Hélène Dubé, J.S.C.), and was called to the Quebec Bar in 2016.

Marie Anne is a member of the Quebec Family Law Lawyers Association (AAADFQ) and is involved in mentoring articling students within the firm. She provides legal services in both French and English.

Outside of the practice of law, Marie Anne has a longstanding interest in psychology and interpersonal dynamics, an interest that informs her understanding of complex family relationships and conflict.

Case History

Cases
  • Litigation Highlights
  • Droit de la famille — 26135 (2026) - Represented the mother in proceedings involving parenting arrangements, child support, and co-ownership issues concerning a child with special needs. Obtained orders maintaining the child’s primary residence with the mother, opposed the father’s application to reinstate shared parenting, and secured detailed findings regarding child support, special expenses, and the parties’ financial obligations following the separation.
  • Droit de la famille — 26412 (2026) - Represented the wife in contested divorce proceedings involving the division of substantial family assets, valuation of a medical professional corporation, insurance and tax issues, spousal support, and parenting matters relating to two children. Advanced arguments concerning corporate insurance policies and latent tax liabilities, and obtained significant compensatory and support awards together with favourable findings regarding the family residence, family patrimony, and liquidation of the matrimonial regime.
  • Droit de la famille — 25203 (2025) - Acted for the defendant in Superior Court proceedings challenging wage seizure and enforcement measures arising from a 2014 consent agreement. Argued that the defendant’s bankruptcy discharge released the disputed debt and that the seizure should be quashed. The Court determined that the bankruptcy discharge extinguished the obligation and cancelled the wage seizure order.
  • Droit de la famille — 231391 (2023) - Appeared for the father in a contested parenting and child support matter involving two young children. Obtained equal shared parenting time despite opposition relating to the children’s ages and the father’s non-traditional police work schedule, and successfully argued for the imputation of income to the mother following her voluntary reduction in work hours.
  • Droit de la famille — 191664 (2019) - Represented the mother in custody and child support proceedings following the children’s return from Argentina under the Hague Convention. Obtained shared custody, an upward departure from the Quebec child support guidelines based on the father’s asset base, and an additional award for costs.
  • Droit de la famille — 192359 (2019) - Represented the father in contested custody modification proceedings in which the mother sought sole custody in place of a long-standing shared arrangement involving the parties’ 14-year-old twins. Maintained shared custody after the Court accepted psychological evidence regarding loyalty conflict concerns and the importance of continued equal parenting time for the children’s development.
