Marial Lewis is one of Australia's top immigration lawyers. She is an accredited specialist in Immigration Law by the Law Society of NSW as well as two times winner of the prestigious Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30 in 2021 and 2022 and the 2020 John Gibson Award - Young Migration Lawyer of the year by the Law Council of Australia.

She was also named as a finalist in various national awards including, rising star of the year for the Australasian Law Awards and Women in Law, regional/suburban lawyer of the year and 30 under 30 since 2019 to date. Marial is also a lecturer and unit coordinator in the Graduate Diploma of Australian Migration Law and taught administrative law in the Juris Doctor Program at UNSW. Tell us a little bit about your practice and what makes it unique.

Crossover Law Group is an innovative newlaw firm that makes use of technology and innovation to enhance client experience every step of the way.

What common questions are you asked by clients, and what are your answers?

What is the difference between a migration agent and a lawyer? Migration agents are not lawyers even though sometimes they falsely advertise that they are.

Describe one of your most interesting or memorable cases in the past year.

I do a lot of work with clients in detention centres and we had great success with clients being released back in the community after many years in detention.

What is most challenging about your area(s) of expertise?

Immigration law is the most fast changing area of law with policies and laws constantly changing especially during the pandemic.

Were there any particular inspirations (people or events) that spurred your interest in your practice area(s)?

My own personal journey coming to Australia at the age of 16. Having gone through the experience of migration myself, I know the challenges and the opportunities that this step can open up. The sky is the limit and I love helping others achieving their dream to migrate to Australia.

What other interests do you have?

I am interested in social impact and charity work including supporting those who are less fortunate and need help with education and motivation to achieve their dreams.

When motivation and ambition are coupled with hard work, anything can be achieved.
