Biography

Meg Alli has focused her practice on the representation and counseling of management concerning the umbrella of employment laws and regulations affecting corporate clients, not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions. She has defended employers, schools and colleges in state and federal courts, administrative agencies and arbitration proceedings. Meg has also served as select counsel for employment practices liability insurance carriers and represented employers in wage/hour litigation and “class” challenges to pay practices and exempt classifications.In addition to litigation, a focus of Meg’s practice is preventative counseling, auditing and training for management on a wide range of issues, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and complex wage and hour requirements under state and federal law, including collective actions under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. A particular focus of her practice has been to assist employers in properly classifying workers as employees or independent contractors as well as conducting detailed audits relative to employee wage classifications and pay practices under federal and state law. Meg routinely defends employers in courts, arbitration proceedings and government agencies regarding a wide umbrella of employment and civil rights issues. Meg has extensive experience in developing and implementing company policies on these subjects and frequently lectures to management groups, professional associations and educational institutions on employment issues.For years, Meg has also dedicated a portion of her practice to education law. She represents non-public schools and universities on a variety of employment and education legal topics. Active in her community, Meg served on the Board of Directors of a private educational institution and was the Reporter for the Governor of Michigan’s Task Force on Domestic Violence in 1994.

Meg is a member of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and is recognized by Best Lawyers in both Employment and Education law. She is top ranked by USA Chambers (2017)and serves in a management and leadership capacity within Ogletree Deakins.

  • Obtained summary judgment in favor of a large automotive supplier on class-wide claims of failure to provide proper WARN Notice.
  • Obtained summary dismissal and sanctions in favor of a national manufacturer of food products faced with class allegations of unpaid overtime.
  • Worked with a team to defeat class certification in a purported class of nearly 200 production and maintenance supervisors seeking overtime pay under state law patterned after the FLSA.
  • Obtained summary dismissal of a purported class action by hundreds of claims adjusters for overtime pay under Michigan law.
  • Served as local counsel to a multi-line insurance carrier in a nationwide FLSA collective action contesting classification of claims adjusters.
  • Legal counsel on a core corporate team that designed and implemented a system to integrate FMLA procedures with collectively bargained medical time off policies.
  • Developed and implemented an audit of FLSA exempt classifications and payroll practices for a national manufacturer.
  • Designed workforce reduction packages and negotiated numerous executive separation agreements.
