Ludmila Herbst is a Partner at Farris LLP in Vancouver, British Columbia, whose practice focuses on Administrative and Public Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Bet-the-Company Litigation, Corporate and Commercial Litigation, Defamation and Media Law, and Energy Regulatory Law. For more than 25 years, she has acted for clients in corporate, commercial, regulatory, and public law matters involving shareholder disputes, contractual issues, real property and property tax matters, energy regulation, anti-money laundering issues, and other complex disputes.
Ludmila represents clients before all levels of court in British Columbia, as well as the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. She also regularly appears before arbitrators and administrative tribunals, including the British Columbia Utilities Commission and the Property Assessment Appeal Board. Her practice includes counsel work in significant public inquiries, including acting for a participant in the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia.
In addition to her litigation and arbitration work, Ludmila frequently speaks and writes on developments in litigation, arbitration, administrative law, and regulatory matters. She was featured in the February 2023 “Spotlight” of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia in recognition of her longstanding contributions to legal education. She is co-author of Commercial Arbitration in Canada: Domestic and International Arbitrations, a text on arbitration law that has been cited by courts across Canada. She also serves as assistant editor of, and regular contributor to, the Advocate, a legal journal circulated to lawyers throughout British Columbia and the Commonwealth.
Ludmila’s work has been recognized by legal publications including Benchmark Litigation, Chambers Canada, Best Lawyers, and Lexpert. She was named Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of the Year – Energy Regulatory Law in Vancouver for 2023.
