Louis “Tom” T. Runge, Jr. joined Adams and Reese in 2013 as a Partner following the firm’s expansion into Columbia.
Practicing law since 1992, Tom focuses his practice on real estate acquisitions, sales and development, as well as commercial lending and leases. He ranks among Best Lawyers in Real Estate Law, and before earning his J.D. at the University of South Carolina School of Law, Tom earned an M.B.A. at the University of South Carolina, and worked as a commercial lending officer for a bank.
Tom’s representative experience includes:
- Representing developers, buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants, lenders, and investors in real estate development, sales, acquisitions, financing, leasing, construction, land use and zoning, and title insurance matters.
- Representing lenders in connection with loans to businesses and for real estate development.
- Representing local and national homebuilders in developing residential subdivisions and residential development projects.
- Negotiating loan workouts, loan restructuring, and buyers in the purchase loan and distressed assets from financial institutions.
A former board member and vice chair of public affairs for the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Tom was recognized by the South Carolina Bar Association as a 2011 Pro Bono Award recipient for his work on behalf of housing for the poor and disadvantaged. In 2010, he also received the “Leadership in Law” award from South Carolina Lawyers Weekly.
Tom is active in the community and currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Hammond School. He also serves as secretary of the Board of Directors for Trinity Housing Corporation, and as a commissioner on the Trinity Foundation Commission. Trinity Housing Corporation runs St. Lawrence Place, a transitional housing facility for homeless families. Tom uses his real estate experience to arrange for and close on rehab loans and new property purchase and development of affordable housing for the organization.
Among the people Tom most admires are those who volunteer their time for worthwhile causes, and also Neil Armstrong for his fearless drive to accomplish that which had never been done.
In his spare time, Tom enjoys reading, going on family trips and watching college football.
