Lisa Corrente is a partner in the Litigation and Health Care Law Groups at Torkin Manes LLP in Toronto, Ontario. Her practice focuses on advising and representing health care facilities and professionals, including long-term care homes, retirement homes, group homes, treatment foster homes and other residential congregate living facilities, as well as their staff members.
Lisa works closely with clients facing urgent and sensitive matters that require practical legal guidance and timely responses. She advises and represents clients in connection with ministry inspections, police investigations, statutory compliance matters, licensing issues, administrative reviews and appeals, conditions and orders, administrative monetary penalties, and complaints brought by residents and family members. Her work also includes matters involving professional regulatory colleges, the Patient Ombudsman, privacy and access to information requests, CAS verification decisions, tenancy disputes, professional discipline proceedings and civil litigation. In addition, Lisa advises employers on workplace matters, including wrongful dismissal claims, human rights and employment standards complaints, workplace investigations, accessibility compliance under the AODA, pay equity matters and workplace dispute resolution.
As part of her Health Care Law practice, Lisa regularly appears before courts, tribunals and regulatory bodies across Ontario, including the Licence Appeal Tribunal, the Health Services Appeal and Review Board, the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Landlord and Tenant Board, the Pay Equity Hearings Tribunal, discipline committees of regulatory colleges, the Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
Lisa has acted as counsel in significant matters affecting the health care and congregate living sectors, including representing a long-term care home operator in the 2018 public inquiry into the murders committed by a former registered nurse. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she advised long-term care homes and other congregate living settings on rapidly evolving legal and regulatory requirements and continues to counsel clients on legislative and compliance developments affecting the sector.
Active within the legal community, Lisa is the past chair of both the Ontario Bar Association’s Health Law Section and the Canadian Bar Association’s National Health Law Section. She is also a member of the Canadian Association of Workplace Investigators. Lisa contributes to Pro Bono Ontario’s legal clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children, where she provides legal services to families receiving care at SickKids. She helped establish the initiative in 2009 and was recognized with Lexpert’s Zenith Pro Bono Award. Lisa has also been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada and Who’s Who Legal for her work in health law and is a recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s Susan Hillary Davidson Memorial Award for Excellence in Health Law.
Lisa regularly speaks at legal, industry and client seminars, webinars and conferences on topics relevant to health care providers and residential care operators, including licensing and inspections, privacy, workplace issues, medical assistance in dying, regulatory compliance and legal risk management.
