Lawrence S. Katz earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in government, with a minor in psychology, from the University of Miami. He continued his legal education at the University of Miami School of Law, graduating early in January 1968, and later attended the LLM program in International Law.
He began his legal career with Hoffman & St. Jean, P.A., where he worked as a law clerk and associate handling matters primarily involving criminal law and family law. During this time, he prepared legal filings challenging the constitutionality of the Miami Beach billboard statute and participated in federal criminal cases within the Fifth Circuit that contributed to changes in the law related to interstate transportation of stolen property.
Mr. Katz later practiced as a solo attorney while sharing office space with other lawyers. In this phase of his career, he challenged the constitutionality of Florida’s LSD statute and litigated the criminalization of abortion in state court prior to Roe v. Wade.
