There is not much that rattles Katie Kober.
A business valuation during a divorce? Start with the financial records. Separate and marital property that have been commingled for years? Begin tracing the details. Military retirement benefits with their own rules and procedures? Determine which regulations apply and how they affect the case.
Katie enjoys solving complicated problems, especially when they involve financial analysis. After more than a decade practicing Family Law, she has built a practice focused on helping Clients navigate complex divorce and family law matters with a practical, steady approach.
Based in Cary, North Carolina, Katie represents individuals and families throughout the Triangle area as part of the team at Triangle Smart Divorce. Her practice includes Family Law and Family Law: Arbitration and Mediation, with a strong focus on financially complex divorce cases.
From the beginning of her legal career, Katie knew she wanted to work closely with Clients rather than in an environment where people felt like case numbers. She wanted to build relationships, understand each Client’s goals, and help people move through difficult transitions with clear information and thoughtful guidance.
She began practicing law at a North Carolina firm handling both criminal and family law matters before relocating to Alabama, where she joined a practice devoted exclusively to family law. That experience confirmed the kind of work she wanted to do long term. Family law combined analytical problem-solving with meaningful client relationships and constantly evolving legal and financial issues.
Since then, Katie has represented Clients in a wide range of family law matters, including divorce, equitable distribution, child custody, child support, spousal support, mediation, and arbitration. She regularly works with business owners, professionals, and individuals with substantial assets whose cases involve business valuations, high-value estates, and complicated questions involving marital and separate property.
Katie particularly enjoys the financial side of divorce cases. She is comfortable reviewing financial statements, tracing assets, evaluating business interests, and analyzing records that require careful attention to detail. Her methodical approach helps Clients better understand the financial issues affecting their cases and the options available to them.
She also has extensive experience handling military divorce matters. Military retirement benefits and related issues often involve unique federal rules and procedures in addition to North Carolina family law considerations. Katie works with Clients to address military pension division, former spouse benefits, and related financial matters that can arise during divorce proceedings.
Clients often appreciate Katie’s calm and practical demeanor during difficult situations. Family law disputes can involve emotional and financial uncertainty, particularly when significant assets, business interests, or parenting issues are involved. Katie focuses on understanding the facts, identifying what matters most, and developing a strategy tailored to each Client’s circumstances and goals.
That collaborative and thoughtful approach is one of the reasons Katie joined Triangle Smart Divorce. She values working in a team environment where attorneys can exchange ideas, discuss strategy, and support one another while helping Clients address challenging legal issues.
Katie’s work has earned recognition within the legal community, including selections to North Carolina Super Lawyers Rising Stars and recognition by Best Lawyers for her work in family law.
Outside the office, Katie spends much of her time with her three children and their activities, which include cheerleading, football, and lacrosse. She attended East Carolina University before earning her law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and she still enjoys the ongoing college sports debates that come with practicing in North Carolina.
Whether she is analyzing a business valuation, addressing military retirement issues, guiding a Client through mediation, or helping someone prepare for the next stage of life after divorce, Katie approaches each matter the same way: understand the facts, evaluate the numbers, and focus on practical solutions.
