Since articling in 1999 with a national insurer, Kadey B.J. Schultz's practice has focused on Insurance Law, including insurance defence litigation, anti-fraud investigations, and coverage disputes. Based in Toronto, Ontario with Schultz Law Group LLP, I represent insurers, businesses, and clients in matters involving accident benefits claims, tort defence, property disputes, coverage disputes, loss transfer, and priority disputes. I have extensive experience appearing before the Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal for Ontario, Supreme Court of Canada, FSCO, the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT).
My practice includes defending and advancing claims involving opportunistic and organized auto, property, life, and health insurance fraud. I work closely with clients to develop practical litigation and risk management strategies while addressing the legal and business considerations that arise in complex insurance matters.
I have been recognized by peers and industry organizations with honours including the Lexpert Zenith Mid-Career Excellence Award, Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40, Lexpert US/Canada Litigators to Watch, and the Canadian Defence Lawyers’ Exceptional Young Lawyer Award. I have also been recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada for Insurance Law since 2019.
In addition to my legal practice, I have served as an adjunct professor at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law, teaching courses including Lawyer as Conflict Resolver, Professional Identity and Legal Skills (PILS), and the Business of Law. I have also acted as guest faculty with the Education and Development Bureau of the Ontario Provincial Police, the Ontario Police College, and Toronto Police Service. From 2002 to 2005, I was a professor with Brock University, where I designed and taught Canada’s first university-level Conflict Management in Policing course within the Criminal Justice and Policing Bachelor of Arts program.
I regularly publish and lecture on Insurance Law, insurance fraud, litigation strategy, and dispute resolution for organizations including the Ontario Insurance Adjusters Association, the Canadian Insurance Adjusters Association, the Insurance Institute, Canadian Defence Lawyers, RIMS Canada, the Ontario Bar Association, and Osgoode Hall Professional Development. I also worked closely with the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto, serving most recently as First Vice President.
Community involvement remains an important part of my professional and personal life. I am a member of the WICC Gala Committee and support several charitable initiatives throughout Toronto and Ontario. My primary fundraising efforts support Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and the Biggar Endowment, which assists children living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation.
