Julie Abouchar, B.Sc. (Hons.), LL.B., B.C.L., LL.M., is a partner at Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP and certified as a Specialist in Indigenous Legal Issues and Environmental Law by the Law Society of Ontario. Julie provides solutions to environmental law issues including water taking and discharges, contaminated land risk avoidance, regulatory management and compliance. Julie is recognised for her experience working with Indigenous communities. Focusing on resource and infrastructure projects, she is accomplished at advising both clients who are engaging with Indigenous peoples and advising Indigenous communities and businesses. She brings a unique understanding of both perspectives to her work. Of particular note, Julie has been assisting the Region of Peel to implement duty to consult requirements and negotiate agreement with First Nations. .She advises on consultation about regulatory authorizations and environmental assessment, negotiates and drafts impact benefit agreements, consultation agreements and participation agreements, advises about archaeology law, and the application of the duty to consult in the planning law context. She facilitates dispute resolution in the mining, infrastructure, and energy sectors.Since 2007 Julie has served as a member of the CTC Source Protection Committee. Julie is co-author of Ontario Water Law, published by Canada Law Book. Julie is peer selected annually for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in Canada for Environmental Law, Aboriginal Law, and Energy Regulatory Law. She is ranked “Repeatedly Recommended” by the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for Environmental Law and Aboriginal Law. Julie is named annually in the Who’s Who Legal—Environment Guide and is ranked by Lexpert as a leading Canadian lawyer in global mining. Julie is called to the Bars of Ontario, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
