Flaherty in the Rhode Island Supreme Court, where he contributed to drafting opinions, bench memoranda, and analyzing appellate cases.

In addition, Joe was an active participant in the Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules of Evidence Committee, presenting legal research findings to the committee. During law school, he excelled as a member of the honors program and was part of the law review, serving on its editorial board as an Articles Editor.
