Johnathan P. Osha brings more than 30 years of intellectual property experience to Osha Bergman Watanabe & Burton LLP, where he advises clients on patent strategy, international intellectual property matters, and complex IP portfolio management. Based in Houston, Texas, his practice includes Litigation - Patent and Patent Law, with a focus on electronics, optics, physics, and emerging technologies. He also mentors attorneys and patent agents within the firm and leads the firm’s electronics, optics, and physics group.
John counsels clients on domestic and international intellectual property issues involving patent procurement, portfolio development, and long-term IP strategy. His experience spans a broad range of technologies and industries, helping companies navigate evolving legal and business considerations related to innovation and intellectual property protection.
International harmonization of intellectual property laws has been a significant part of John’s professional work outside the firm. He served for 10 years on the Bureau of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), an organization based in Zurich, and became the first American to serve as Reporter General for the organization. He also participates in the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s Harmonization Committee, contributing to substantive and procedural harmonization discussions involving the Industry Trilateral and IP5 Industry groups.
John is also active in discussions involving artificial intelligence and intellectual property law. During his service on the AIPPI Bureau, he coordinated work on multiple AI-related resolutions. He currently chairs the AIPLA’s AI task force and the IPO’s AI policy subcommittee, and he serves as AIPLA’s representative on the IP5 industry AI task force.
