John R. McGhee, Jr. is the Chairman of the firm's Insurance/Litigation Practice Group. Mr. McGhee's practice of law is primarily concentrated in the areas of insurance defense, products/premises liability defense, insurance coverage, as well as in federal criminal defense work. Mr. McGhee graduated cum laude from Hampden-Sydney College in 1986 with a bachelor's degree, and he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. He received his J.D. degree from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1989 and is a member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. McGhee was Co-Editor of the National Coal Issue of the West Virginia Law Review. He was admitted to practice law in West Virginia in 1989 and in Kentucky in 1997 and is listed in The Best Lawyers In America for Insurance Law. Currently, Mr. McGhee is an Executive Board Member of the Buckskin Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serves on the Peterkin Committee for the Episcopal Diocese of WV and is Vice President of the West Virginia State Bar. Additionally, Mr. McGhee is currently a Boy Scout Venture Crew Advisor and attended the 2013 National Scout Jamboree to be held for the first time at the Summit, the Boy Scouts of America's newest high adventure base located in Fayette County. Mr. McGhee has served as a lecturer on topics of insurance law and is always willing to do so for Bar related groups or clients. Among Mr. McGhee's achievements include being listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America© and in the 2011 West Virginia Super Lawyers for Personal Injury Defense: General. Previously, he served as a Vestry Member and Senior Warden of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Charleston, West Virginia, and as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia. He is a former District Commissioner of the Buckskin Council/BSA and former lawyer representative for the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia for Criminal Justice Act Attorneys.
